About Velcrypt
Your phone holds things you would never hand to a stranger: a scan of your passport, photos from a hospital visit, pictures meant for one person only. Yet the Photos app is built for sharing and scrolling, and a borrowed phone or a curious glance is often all it takes. Velcrypt is a quiet, separate place for those files.
Why Velcrypt exists
Many vault apps ask you to create an account, push your files to a cloud, or wrap a simple PIN in marketing language. We wanted something narrower and easier to trust: a native iPhone app that encrypts your files on the device, opens with a pattern only you know, and tells you plainly what it cannot do.
Velcrypt is that app. It stores photos, videos and documents in encrypted vaults, each opened by its own pattern on a 5×5 grid. A pattern it has never seen opens an empty vault, so nothing in the app reveals how many vaults you have. The details are on the security model page.
Our principles
On-device, always
Your vault content is encrypted and stored on your iPhone and nowhere else. There are no servers for your files and no uploads. The offline, no-account page explains what that means day to day.
No account
There is no sign-up, no email address and no password reset flow. An account would be one more thing that could be breached or used to link you to your data.
No biometrics, by design
Velcrypt deliberately doesn’t offer Face ID or Touch ID. Biometrics are convenient, but a face or a finger can be used without your consent. A pattern exists only in your memory. You can read the reasoning in pattern lock vs PIN vs Face ID.
Honest limits
Privacy tools fail people when they overpromise. We would rather tell you up front that Velcrypt can’t stop someone watching you draw your pattern, can’t protect a phone handed over with the vault open, and can’t recover a forgotten pattern. Those limits are listed in full under what Velcrypt does not protect against. We also don’t claim an audit we haven’t had.
No ads, no selling data
Velcrypt shows no advertising and doesn’t sell data. It doesn’t collect your vault content or analytics about it, so there is nothing to sell. Velcrypt will be funded by an optional Premium upgrade — see pricing.
What’s next
These items are planned. They are not in the app today, and we won’t attach dates until they are ready.
| Item | Status |
|---|---|
| Duress pattern — opens a chosen vault and silently removes access to the others | Coming soon (Premium) |
| Encrypted backup and recovery option | Planned (Premium) |
| More vaults and unlimited items | Planned (Premium) |
Anything we add will follow the same principles: on-device by default, no account, and a clear explanation of the trade-offs.

Frequently asked questions
Why doesn’t Velcrypt store anything in the cloud?
Because data that never leaves your phone can’t be exposed by a server breach, a subpoena to a provider or a reused password. The trade-off is that there’s no recovery if you lose the phone or forget the pattern.
Does Velcrypt make money from my data?
No. Velcrypt doesn’t collect your vault content or analytics about it and shows no ads. The plan is a free version with an optional paid Premium upgrade.
What is Velcrypt working on next?
Planned items include a duress pattern (coming soon) and an encrypted backup option, both as part of Premium. Neither has a release date yet.
