Why your photos show up on the family iPad, and how to separate them
It often starts with a surprised “Mum, what’s this?” from the sofa. A photo you took on your iPhone has appeared on the family iPad, or on the Mac in the kitchen. Nobody did anything wrong — the devices are doing exactly what they were set up to do. Untangling it takes a few settings and a short family chat.
Why your photos appear on other devices
There are two common causes on Apple devices:
One Apple Account on several devices
Many families set up the first iPad with a parent’s Apple Account. If iCloud Photos is turned on, every photo you take on your iPhone appears on that iPad, along with your Hidden album and Recently Deleted. The Hidden album is locked by default on iOS 16 and later, but it unlocks with that device’s passcode or Face ID — so whoever uses the iPad can open it. See are hidden photos saved to iCloud?
iCloud Shared Photo Library
iCloud Shared Photo Library (iOS 16.1 and later) is a separate library shared with up to five other people. Everyone can add, edit and delete. Depending on your settings, the Camera can add photos to it automatically — for example when family members are nearby. That’s lovely for holiday photos and less lovely for a screenshot of a prescription.
How to separate things
- Give each person their own Apple Account. Family Sharing lets you share purchases, subscriptions and iCloud storage while each person keeps their own photos. Children can have their own accounts managed by a parent.
- Sign shared devices out of your account. On the iPad or Mac, go to Settings (or System Settings) › your name and sign out, then sign in with the right person’s account. Make sure you’re not deleting the only copy of anything first.
- Review Shared Library settings. In the Photos settings, check how photos are added to the Shared Library. Turn off automatic sharing if you’d rather choose each photo yourself.
- Move items back to your Personal Library. In Photos you can move selected photos from the Shared Library back to your Personal Library.
- Check other shared spaces. Shared albums, shared notes and Messages on a Mac signed in to your account can also reveal photos.
On iOS 18 the Photos app layout changed: Hidden and Recently Deleted now live under “Utilities”. If a label looks different on your device, look for the equivalent option in the Photos app or in Settings › Apps › Photos (Settings › Photos on older versions).
A note on iCloud encryption
iCloud Photos is encrypted, but by default Apple holds the keys. With Advanced Data Protection turned on, iCloud Photos becomes end-to-end encrypted, though shared albums are not covered. Encryption protects photos on Apple’s servers; it doesn’t stop every device signed in to the account, or every Shared Library participant, from seeing them.
How Velcrypt helps
Velcrypt takes a different route: it keeps private photos, videos and documents in an encrypted vault on your iPhone only. There’s no account, no server and no sync, so nothing you put in a vault can appear on the family iPad, the Mac or a Shared Library.
Importing copies a photo into the vault. To take it off every synced device, delete the original from Photos and empty Recently Deleted; with iCloud Photos on, that deletion syncs to your other devices too. The vault opens with a pattern on a 5×5 grid, not with the device passcode or Face ID.
Honest limits
- Because vaults don’t sync, you can’t view vault items on an iPad or Mac. Velcrypt is an iPhone app.
- In the first version, vault data isn’t in iCloud or computer backups. If your iPhone is lost or you forget the pattern, the vault can’t be recovered. An encrypted backup option is planned.
- Anything that was already shared — to a Shared Library, a shared album or a message — may still exist on other devices. Check those places too.
- The Velcrypt icon is visible on your Home Screen unless you use iOS 18’s option to hide apps.
Sharing a digital life with family is mostly a good thing. The aim is just to decide, on purpose, which parts are shared.
Frequently asked questions
Why do my iPhone photos show up on my kid’s iPad?
Most often because the iPad is signed in to your Apple Account with iCloud Photos turned on, or because you share an iCloud Shared Photo Library with automatic sharing enabled. Signing the iPad in to the child’s own account fixes the first case.
Does the Hidden album sync to other devices?
Yes. With iCloud Photos on, hidden photos sync to every device signed in to the same Apple Account. They’re locked there too on recent versions, but the device’s own passcode or Face ID unlocks them.
How do I stop photos going into the Shared Library automatically?
In the Photos settings under Shared Library, you can turn off automatic sharing from the Camera, or switch the Camera to save to your Personal Library. You can also move individual photos back to your Personal Library.
Do Velcrypt vaults sync to my iPad or Mac?
No. Velcrypt is iPhone-only, has no account and no cloud sync. In the first version vault data is also excluded from iCloud and computer backups.
